Bit to Do [1]
By Allan Day [3]

Ladies and gentlemen, it has happened: local Louisville favorite Jennifer Lawrence, star of this year's The Hunger Games

and

The House at the End of the Street

, has won her first ever Academy Award for her starring role in David O. Russel's

Silver Lining's Playbook.

She first came to fame in 2010 with

Winter's Bone

, for which she also received a Best Actress nomination.

Silver Lining's Playbook [4]

(the review of which by myself can be found here [5]) was also nominated for Film Editing, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actress (Jacki Weaver), Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro), Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Director (David O. Russel), Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture. It won only the Oscar, for Best Actress.

Lawrence beat out Jessica Chastain for

Zero Dark Thirty

, Emmanuelle Riva for

Amour

(at age 86, the oldest women to be nominated in the category),

Quvenzhané Wallis for

Beasts of the Southern Wild

(at age 9, the youngest to be nominated in the category), and Naomi Watts for

The Impossible.

Lincoln,

the other film with a local connection (my review can be viewed here [6]), received the most Academy Award nominations this year, including Costume Design, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Mixing, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actress (Sally Field), Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones), Director (Steven Spielberg), and Best Picture. It won Oscars for Best Production Design and Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis).`

Argo won Best Picture, not undeservedly, but taking everybody by surprise (I was personally rooting for Beasts of the Southern Wild), beating out Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables

, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty.

(Regular readers [who have been paying attention] may be interested to know that in this, my fourth annual Oscars Watch Party / Drinking Game, I came in fourth place. My friend Tanner came in first for the second time.)
