Rachel Alexandra returned for her four-year-old campaign after several months away from training. Although she won the Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs and the Lady's Secret at Monmouth Park, and placed in three other races, she was never able to attain the magnificence she showed the year before.
Bernardini only raced as a three-year-old, but like Rachel Alexandra, only needed one year to show his brilliance. He won the 2006 Preakness Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Jockey Club Gold Cup, all Grade 1 events. He also won the Grade 3 Withers and Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes. He finished his career second to Invasor in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
As a sire, the ten-year-old Bernardini has produced stakes champions such as Stay Thirsty, To Honor and Serve, and Alpha, to name a few. He also sired champion Zenyatta’s first foal, a colt born early last year.
Rachel Alexandra’s firstborn colt was named Jess's Dream after owner Barbara Banke held a naming contest seeking an appropriate moniker to honor her late husband and co-owner Jess Jackson. The colt celebrated his first birthday earlier this year and now resides at Stonestreet's Yearling Division in Versailles, Ky. No word on whether a naming contest will be held to decide the new filly’s name.
