Life needs a little quirkiness. Eclecticism can be trite and silly, but also fun and refreshing, if done well. There's a reason Zooey Deschanel is All The Rage right now and why we have such designations as “Manic Pixie Dream Girl.” To those to whom all these things appeal, you're in luck: the University of Louisville Floyd Theater has you covered – as usual.

This week at the Floyd starts tonight (Thursday) with a double-screening of Ruby Sparks [4]

, the newest effort by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, creators of the excellent

Little Miss Sunshine

. Paul Dano stars as Calvin, a brilliant young novelist with a bad case of writer's block. As he tries to write, he creates a character named Ruby Sparks and begins to fall in love with her – and finds to his surprise that she has come into existence through the will of his own creative prowess.

Ruby Sparks

plays tonight at 5:00 and 8:00.

The weekend brings four screenings of the new film by the king of quirk, Wes Anderson.

Moonrise Kingdom [5]

is his seventh film, and is by far the most Wes Anderson-y of any Wes Anderson film thus far. (It is also this writer's favorite of his repertoire.)

Moonrise Kingdom

is the story of young and persistent love on a New England island in 1965. Twelve-year-old khaki scout Sam decides he is in love with Suzy, who returns his affections. Together, they run away from home and set up camp in the island while everyone searches for them desperately – all while a vicious storm is brewing.

Moonrise Kingdom

plays on Friday and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00.

The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus (look for the clock tower). As usual, admission is $1.50 for students and $3.00 for the general public. Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page [6].
