Circus—Live at Impellizzeri's Enjoy the rock and/or roll, R&B and bluesy sounds of Circus at Impellizzeri's downtown location. Be sure to come celebrate commencement—or drown your sorrows about the job market—UofL students. Dec. 16, 9–11:30 p.m. 'The Kings of Christmas' It's Christmas and the eccentric King family has gathered for its 10th family Christmas since the passing of its patriarch, an Elvis-impersonating magician known as The Magistic King who died or disappeared while on stage during a nationally televised magic show. What's more, the family cat, Marley, has just that day met a very similar demise. When middle son Carter arrives home determined this year will be his last Christmas with the family he has deemed an embarrassment, the "lunatic family" tries to rekindle Carter's Christmas spirit in an unorthodox way...with a little help from some spirits (based on this description, they're likely Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, and Johnny Walker) . Brisk, irreverent and laugh-filled fun, The Kings of Christmas will fill even the Scrooge-iest types with holiday cheer. Plus...you can drink during the show (if of age, of course). Dec. 16, 7:30 p.m. 'A Christmas Carol' Before Charles Dickens became best-known for lending his last name to an adjective used to describe The Wire, he was an author. This play is an adaptation of his novella of the same name—a beloved holiday celebration filled with warmth, visual splendor, and joyous music. Through Dec. 23
This year VOICES will perform favorite selections in a concert called VOICES of Holidays Past. The artistic director is Matthew Butterfield. VOICES is a voluntary, not-for-profit community chorus (as opposed to a mandatory not-for profit chorus, which is what your mother made you sign up for in middle school). VOICES is Kentuckiana's fully inclusive, self-affirming chorus. Its membership is inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and heterosexual friends. VOICES is organized to provide the opportunity for gay, lesbian and supportive others to sing together. Dec. 17, 7:30 p.m., Dec. 18, 3 p.m. Rachael Yamagata at Headliners Music Hall Rachael Yamagata is an American singer-songwriter and pianist from Arlington, Va. She began her musical career with the band Bumpus (possibly one of the greatest band names ever) before becoming a solo artist and releasing four EPs and three studio albums. Her songs have appeared on numerous television shows and she has collaborated with musicians including Jason Mraz, Rhett Miller, Ryan Adams, Toots and the Maytals, and Ray Lamontagne. This show is a first-come first-serve, 18 and over event. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. Dec. 17, 8 p.m. Lights Under Louisville The Louisville Mega Cavern has been transformed into an underground holiday light spectacular for the Christmas season (sorry, Ariel, apparently there's no menorah). So load up your goy kids and enjoy a 30-40-minute ride through part of 17 miles of underground passageways, which feature more than 500 lit characters and 1 million points of light (George H.W. Bush would be proud). It’s the only underground light show of its kind on the planet. Mega Cavern’s Lights Under Louisville allows members of the public to drive their own vehicle inside the cavern during the Christmas season to experience this one-of-a-kind holiday transformation. Holiday Bubbly Brunch at Asiatique Asiatique will offer a holiday brunch, featuring four courses paired with four international effervescent (adj. giving off bubbles; fizzy) wines. The menu will include a carrot soup served with a Gruet (from New Mexico) demi-sec (I've never had this variety, but Gruet's Brut is fantastic); an arugula salad paired with a French Deligeroy Cremant de Loire ("Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?"); duck breast with Sarawak peppercorns and spaghetti squash, served with a Bortolotti Rosato Lagrein from Italy; and a cereal-and-juice dessert, paired with a Albino Rocca Moscato d’Asti. Dec. 18, 1 p.m. Comedy Caravan Presents Torian Hughes featuring Jeremy Greenburg Fill the room with laughter while enjoying Mr. Torian Hughes. His television credits include Comedy Central's Stand – Up, Stand – Up, BET's Comic View, The Stephanie Miller Show, An Evening At The Improv and a run to the semifinal round of the original Star Search (so he's likely met the late Ed McMahon!). In recent years, in addition to performing in Los Angeles venues, Torian has been a writer and producer for several network comedy shows, including MAD TV on Fox and EVE on UPN. He's a thoughtful and funny observer of the modern condition whose performances continue to win him ovations from coast to coast. Dec. 14–18 |
