So, you may or may not have noticed that I skipped my beer review post last week. It was completely intentional, as I figured that between the upcoming basketball games and St. Patrick's Day most people were going to have two types of beer on their mind - Guinness and the ever popular (but only around St. Pat's ) "green" beer. I personally would love to know what type of malts they use to give it that beautiful, deep green color, but I digress and we'll get back to the real reason we're here...my thoughtful musings and my post-Patty's day beer review - Schlafly Irish-Style Extra Stout [4].
I generally can't say enough good things about Schlafly, and luckily that trend continues. This yummy stout, available only from January through March, pours a deep black and smells of semi-sweet chocolate. I was as happy as a leprechaun with a pot of gold after I took my first sip. This was a very refreshing and easy drinking stout with a nice balance of sweet and bitterness. Hitting the scales at 8.0% ABV and 45 IBU's, one or two will catch up with you quickly. Overall I felt this was a very good take on a Foreign Stout [5], and the good 'ol guys and gals over at Beeradvocate.com [6] and Ratebeer.com [7] seem to agree, with average ratings of 89 and 96 respectively.
If you can still find it then I suggest trying it, but if not, then please make sure to drink some of this next year in place of your 100% organic, locally made, spinach infused, "green" beer. I understand the health benefits of it, but come on, live a little.
