  • "Republican gubernatorial candidate David Williams predicted Monday that he will pull off a shocking upset in Tuesday’s election by unseating Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, who led by 25 percentage points in the most recent public poll. 'We’ve had a tremendous closing two or three weeks here. We’ve been out all over the state. ... I think the informed people of this state are going turn up tomorrow at the election and we’re going to have an upset victory,' he said during a morning appearance in Louisville.'" • "They’re slimy and slithery and devilishly beady-eyed. They can grow up to 2 feet long, and sometimes fishermen kill them, thinking they’re poisonous snakes.
But the hellbender, Kentucky’s largest salamander, is a harmless amphibian — and an important gauge of our environmental health. 'I consider the hellbender to be a major indicator of a waterway in excellent to pristine condition,' said John MacGregor, a herpetologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. 'The loss of the hellbender,' he said, 'basically signifies a reduction in the quality of our waterways.' And that’s exactly what’s happening. Last month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service put the hellbender on its endangered-species list, because its habitat has been degraded by waterway pollution and its numbers thinned by over-collection." • "Uncle Mo, the 2-year-old champion of 2010 who dazzled with his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile win a year ago, has been retired from racing, his connections announced." [Courier-Journal] [6]
