Zanzabar hosts UK bands One Eskimo [4] and Scars on 45 [5] along with English-Thai singer Hugo [6]for a night of indie rock on Friday, November 5 at 8:00 p.m.
When I first started researching One Eskimo, I listened to the song "Kandi," which was instantly recognizable, although I couldn't figure out why. I assumed it has been in heavy rotation on the WFPK playlist, and indeed, the single from their self-titled debut album reached #1 on the US AAA radio chart.
This London band is fronted by smoky-voiced singer-songwriter Kristian Leontiou with Adam Falkner on drums, guitarist Pete Rinaldi, and Jamie Sefton on bass and horns. (On a completely trivial, but grim side note for true crime followers, murder victim Meredith Kercher [7] once appeared in one of Leontiou's music videos. She was the young Briton killed in Perugia, Italy -- a sensational crime for which American student Amanda Knox and two others were convicted by an Italian court.)
Opening for One Eskimo is Leeds-based band Scars on 45 along with Hugo, a bluesy singer whose debut album is called "Old Tyme Religion." Born in England and raised in Thailand, Hugo Chakrabongse is a former actor and model and, in another stroke of weird trivia, is the great grandson of Thai monarch King Rama V.
Tickets for the show at Zanzabar [8] are $10, available at the door, at ear-X-tacy [9] or via Ticketfly.com [10]. Below is the video for One Eskimo's hit "Kandi":
