It may still be hotter than a pepper sprout outside, but believe it or not, sick-season is looming on the horizon.  We've only been in school for five hectic weeks, but my daughter has already come home with an oozing, crusty nose that kicked my proactive parenting powers into gear. Is your medicine cabinet ready for the laundry list of ailments your children bring home: pink eye, bronchitis, tonsillitis, diaper rash, ear infections?

Amazing Grace has often been my saving grace when battling persistent coughs, runny-everythings, and chafed-unmentionables that creep into my house, so I stopped in today to get the run-down of exactly what all parents need in their medicinal armory.  NJ Brundridge, who is always helpful and knowledgeable about natural and homeopathic medicine, recommended the following:

  • Oscillococcinum (by Boiron)--take the dissolving pill at the first sign of flu or cold; recommended around the world; can be purchased at all major drug stores
  •  Astragalus and Echinacea (herbals)-- both herbs have been used for centuries to boost the immune system, reduce free radicals that lead to cancer, and have anti-bacterial and anti-inflamatory properties; basically each herb eases stresses on the body that weaken it, making it more prone to infections.  Have you children sip tea made out of these herbs mixed with honey (they'll never know it's "medicine").
  • Zinc and Vitamin C-- cuts down the duration of the infection once symptoms begin
  • Probiotics-- are natural organisms that dwell in the human digestive system that aide digestion and overall health.  Consuming probiotics (yogurt and supplements) also boosts immune health and is necessary if your child takes anti-biotics to reintroduce the healthy bacteria erased by these drugs.
  • Chestal (by Boiron)-- non-drowsy, honey-based cough syrup and overall deep chest fixer-upper
  • Similasan Pink Eye Drops-- OTC and natural remedy for pink eye
  • Garlic ear oil-- garlic is good for everything so put it in as much food as your kids can stand, but heat the oil and drop into the ear to create a hostile environment for infection (yes, it smells, but I've had pretty good luck fighting ear infections sans anitbiotics).
