Many of us have hazardous materials piled up around our homes, basements and garages, but don't have a clue about how to dispose of them properly. Make them a HAZ BIN, with Louisville Metro's Household Hazardous Materials [4] collection program, run by the Metro Solid Waste Management Department. This program allows Metro residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous materials that are not accepted by garbage collection or recycling centers.

Household items accepted at HAZ BIN:

Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, insecticides

Fertilizers

Lawn/Garden chemicals

Swimming pool chemicals

Driveway sealers

Gasoline (including boat gas)

Kerosene

Solvents and degreasers

Mildew removers

Asbestos floor tiles

Fluorescent light bulbs

Mercury thermometers and thermostats

Nail polish and removers

Mothballs

Furniture polishes and waxes

Cleaners (bathroom, rug, upholstery, all-purpose spot removers)

Metal polishes and rust removers

Oven and drain cleaners

Batteries (auto, household and rechargeable)

Hearing aid/watch batteries

Automotive fluids

Mineral spirits/turpentine

Varnishes and stains

Wood preservatives

Oil-based paint or lead paint*

Propane tanks (1 lb and 20 lb grill tanks)

(*Latex paint is not considered a hazardous material, but it cannot be included in household garbage in liquid form. While wet paint has dangerous fumes, dry paint is not hazardous, so pop the lid and let the paint dry, then dispose of it, lid removed, for garbage collection.)

The HAZ BIN drop off is located at 7501 Grade Lane, about a quarter mile north of Outer Loop, approximately one mile west of I-65.
