Earlier this month, the Louisville Metro Council approved a $12 million land acquisition that will clear the way for the development of the Center City entertainment-retail complex. Despite a contentious debate about Metro's development agreement with The Cordish Company of Baltimore, Maryland, the Council finally approved the project on a vote of 15 to 11. The Cordish Company's development plan for this project calls for a significant expansion of the entertainment center around 4th Street Live!. The plan calls for the development of a mix of shops, bars, restaurants, a hotel, and a cinema complex within the so-called Water Company Block, and it calls for the complete renovation of The Gardens as a possible venue for minor league hockey. The plan also calls for the creation of 1,000 temporary Downtown construction jobs and 2,000 permanent Downtown hospitality industry jobs. It also calls for public and private investments in Downtown Louisville that could ultimately be as high as $460 million.
