The Louisville Visual Art Association [LVAA] presents two landmark exhibits
to the Louisville community. Americans Who Tell the Truth is a collection of
portraits about Americans who exemplify through their words and deeds the
fundamental significance of the First Amendment. The individual portraits by
Maine artist Rob Shetterly bring to life the importance of these principles
in a way no textbook can by presenting the visual representation of the
individuals whose stories are told in accompanying materials.
Stories of Mountaintop Removal is a series of paintings by Kentuckian
Cynthia Ryan Kelly about the environmentally damaging effects of mining
practices in eastern Kentucky. Ms. Kelly spent considerable time living in
eastern Kentucky and researching the life of residents of mining
communities. The series of paintings help us understand the compelling drama
of this experience. Together, with Americans Who Tell the Truth, the two
exhibits offer an opportunity to witness the power of art in presenting
important societal issues and civic responsibilities.
According to Kay Grubola, Artistic Director at LVAA, "The exhibit is a
great opportunity for adults, children and families to experience the
cultural connection between politics, environment and civic responsibility
as communicated through visual art. The exhibit also includes a free
children's activity project sheet." LVAA extended invitations to 250
teachers in a four county area to bring their students to the exhibit for a
guided gallery tour and hands-on related art activity.
Artists' reception and informal gallery talk will take place on Friday,
October 24, 2008 from 6-8PM. Reception will feature artists Rob Shetterly
and Cynthia Ryan Kelly, environmental activists Teri Blanton and Tom
FitzGerald (recent Heinz Award honoree). The "Gallery Talk" will begin at
7PM.
The exhibit is free and open to the public from October 17, 2008 - January
4, 2009 at the Louisville Visual Art Association. For additional
