The award continues Fred’s legacy of promoting beautification and environmental consciousness by recognizing local stewards who have a commitment to preserve and improve the environment.

Gardeners, garden clubs, teachers, schools, environmentalists, etc. are eligible to apply.  There are two award categories – school and adult.

“As Louisville’s longtime television and radio garden expert, Fred Wiche was much beloved in our community,” said Mayor Jerry Abramson.  “When I first created Brightside in 1986, we asked Fred’s advice on our beautification, cleanup and education programs and he was there with us in the beginning as a volunteer to promote the program and teach gardening in our schools.  For this award, we’re looking for citizens who share his passion for our natural environment and for making Louisville look great. ”

The Fred Wiche Award, sponsored by Motorola, Inc., gives cash awards to three Louisville schools for outstanding environmental stewardship.  The public or private schools must be located in Jefferson County.  Environmental projects should be educational and involve full participation by students.  The first place school receives $2,500, second place $1,000 and third place $500.

The Adult Award recognizes the efforts of an individual or group in the Kentuckiana region whose environmental stewardship improves their neighborhood or community.  The adult award is open to residents and groups from the Kentucky counties of Jefferson, Bullitt, Shelby and Oldham; and Indiana counties of Floyd, Clark and Harrison.  The Adult category winner will receive a personalized piece of garden art sculpted by local artist Wyatt Gragg.

Brightside is Louisville’s non-profit organization dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship and beautification.
