Shop for 18th century goods, enjoy the tavern, slackrope walker, jugglers, rat catcher, musicans and mock battles between Brittish and colonial soldiers as hundreds of registered re-encators take you back in time.

Historic Locust Grove in association with Kellar’s Company, Illinois Regiment of Virginia, will host the 18th Century Market Fair that was started in 2004.  This event will be held on the beautiful grounds of Locust Grove in Louisville, Kentucky.

Locust Grove was built in 1790 by William and Lucy (Clark) Croghan.  Situated on fifty-five rolling acres, upriver from Louisville, the grounds feature the original Federal style home, separate kitchen, ice house, spring house and barn.  Additionally, Locust Grove was home to the famous Revolutionary War hero and Louisville founder, General George Rogers Clark during the last nine years of his life.  Historic Locust Grove is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Only two other museums in Kentucky and fewer than 10% of all museums nationwide receive this accreditation.  Proceeds from this and other events support the continuing operation and preservation of this National Historic Landmark, a Louisville Metro Property, managed by Historic Locust Grove, Inc.

The best craftsmen and sutlers have been pre-juried and invited to demonstrate and sell their wares.  This approach ensures the highest quality and selection of items available.  Smoke & Fire, Burnley and Trowbridge, Weeping Heart Trade Company, Horn Book, are just a sampling of some of the exceptional merchants who have previously attended.  Among the artisans that have attended are Westfork Forge, Giordano Tinsmith, Wilde Weavery, and Donna Weaver.

Fair goers can relax in an 18th century tavern, enjoy a performance by Otto the sword swallower, visit the Arrogant French Lace Maker - Monsieur LeFarceur de Villeverte listen to the music of Father, Son & Friends as well as Out of the Ordinary with Denny and Barbara Duffy and be entertained by the street jugglers and entertainers, The Amazing Budabi Brothers.  Period food vendors will sell typical early Kentucky foods and drinks such as ginger beer, ginger ale and apple cider.  Tours of the 1790 home will be ongoing throughout the day.  Colonial cooking demonstrations in the hearth kitchen and a surgeon’s quarters will also show other aspects of life in early America.  The Visitor’s Center will be open during the Fair and features a museum, theater and gift shop.

A military encampment of both British and American Units will be present.  Displaying common tactics of the period, the forces will take the field for a Revolutionary War battle reenactment.  Infantry and artillery will square off on a battlefield that features a natural amphitheater enabling the public to have a bird’s eye view of the action.

A civilian camp that shows the everyday lifestyle of 18th century is another feature of the Market Fair.  In past years, our civilian encampment has provided the visitors with memorable scenarios.

The annual Barn Brou-Ha-Ha and bonfire will be held on Saturday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with music, 18th century children’s games, stories of headless horsemen and other classic ghost tales.  Hot cider and snacks will be available and children are encouraged to wear costumes.  For the younger reenactors, there will be a modern day Trick or Treat through the camp after public hours.

Market Fair admission includes a tour of historic Locust Grove.  Hours for the Market Fair are 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Admission is $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for children six to twelve.  Admission is free for children five and under.  A donation for the Barn Brou-Ha-Ha would be appreciated.

Please come join us for an event that has been successful and promises to be very special and enjoyable for all.
