LOCAL PARENTS FORM CHAPTER OF YOUNG SINGLE PARENTS, INC.
Seeking a greater sense of community, a group of local parents have banded together to form the new Louisville chapter of Young Single Parents, Inc. (YSP).
Nancy Ashbrook, the National President of YSP, describes the organization as "a great way for single parents to gather together, get support, meet others in the same situation and have some FUN!" A social group dedicated to friendship and support for single parents of all kinds, YSP is open to all comers. The only restrictions are that members must be single parents, and they must be between 21 - 50 years of age.
The chapter will hold weekly meetings/socials and discussion groups for the parents as well as monthly events for families such as barbecues and trips to Kentucky Kingdom.
Currently, the chapter is taking shape and developing its character. Some board positions still remain available, and general members are welcome too. Joining early allows new members to take an active role in molding the group's identity.
Jason Langos, a single father of two girls, kick started the effort based on his childhood experiences. As a boy, his mother was a member of YSP in Chicago in the mid 1970s, and some of the youthful friendships Langos made in the group remain strong today. Langos believes in the importance of kids having "a place to be around other kids in the same situation - knowing that they aren't alone."
Once the group is chartered, general member dues will be $25 for the first year, followed by $20 annual renewals, which pays for group events, a newsletter and website development. Board positions are filled by volunteers on an annual basis.
Young Single Parents, Inc. is based in Chicago, Illinois. The nonprofit group was established in 1974 and currently has two chapters operating in the Chicago area with potential new chapters forming in Orland Park, Gurnee, and Crystal Lake.
