After more than a year and a half of acrimony among neighbors in Windy Hills, construction on a sidewalk began last week on a roughly one-mile stretch along Rudy Lane between Brownsboro Road and Hubbards Lane.

The construction began Sept. 8 after Jefferson County Circuit Judge Barry Willett would not grant a temporary restraining order and injunction to three Rudy Lane residents who filed suit to stop construction.

Just days after the decision, heavy equipment and construction crews were working in residents' front yards. In one yard, a construction worker sat in an excavator digging a trench in the shadow of a sign that read: "Stop the Sidewalk." The sign depicted the silhouette of a man cutting down a tree.

For some time, roadside signs have dominated Rudy Lane. Those in favor of the sidewalks put up green-lettered signs that read: "Sidewalks for Safety." Others opposed to the project wrapped orange ribbons around trees that would be cut down in the sidewalk's wake.
